65% of Delhi’s PM2.5 from nearby towns: Data

About 65 per cent of Delhi’s fine particulate pollution (PM2.5) on Wednesday came from areas outside the city, not from within Delhi itself, says data from the Centre’s Decision Support System. Jhajjar in Haryana alone accounted for about 16.5 per cent of the pollution – more than Delhi’s own transport sector contribution. Other nearby towns like Rohtak, Bhiwani and Sonipat also added to the pollution levels. Smoke from stubble burning contributed very little on that day. Experts say coal-based power plants and industrial emissions in neighbouring areas, carried by wind, are key reasons for this cross-boundary pollution.
