BMC mechanical broom raises dust on Western Express Highway, worsening Mumbai air pollution

An article from Mid-Day reports that a mechanical road sweeper operated by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been seen making dust pollution worse on the Western Express Highway (WEH).

A commuter witnessed the machine raising clouds of dust near the Kherwadi flyover while cleaning the road late at night, which is counterproductive for the city's already poor air quality. Following a previous report on similar issues, an environmental expert criticised the operation, stating that if the vehicles are not used according to a proper procedure or well maintained, they just waste money and create more pollution. In response, a BMC official said they would review how the machines are functioning.

This is the second time the newspaper has highlighted problems with BMC's road-cleaning machines potentially worsening air pollution instead of improving it.
