BMC sounds AQI warning, sets up flying squads
Due to rising winter air pollution, Mumbai's civic authority (the BMC) has issued a warning. It has stated that if the air quality index (AQI) in a local ward remains above 200 for three or more days, all construction and industrial work will be stopped.
To enforce this, the BMC has created special 'flying squads' to check that construction sites are following anti-pollution rules. The areas of Deonar and Mazgaon have already had several consecutive days of poor air quality, with AQIs over 200.
An environmental analyst explained that current weather conditions, like low wind speeds, are causing pollutants to build up in the city's air.
