Capital em estrangulamento à medida que a qualidade do ar cai para ‘severo +’
On Sunday, 14 December, air pollution in Delhi, India, reached a new crisis level for this winter. The city's average Air Quality Index (AQI) hit 461, officially classified as "Severe+", which is the second-highest December reading since records began in 2015.
The situation was even worse at a local level, with at least three monitoring stations hitting the maximum reading of 500. The severe pollution was caused by a "temperature inversion"—a layer of cold air trapping pollutants near the ground—combined with very slow winds. Despite emergency measures being in place, including a ban on most construction and a restriction for half of office staff to work from home, residents suffered from breathing difficulties and burning eyes.
Weather forecasts suggest winds may increase from Monday afternoon, offering a gradual but not immediate improvement in air quality.
