Capital sees season’s worst air day

Delhi has just recorded the worst air quality of the winter season and the second-worst December air quality day in nearly ten years. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) rose to about 461, putting most monitoring stations in the dangerous severe category. Only once since records began in 2015 has Delhi seen worse December pollution. The heavy smog is caused by cold weather trapping pollutants close to the ground, and traffic and nearby regional emissions are adding to the problem. Breathing conditions are very poor and present health risks, especially for children, older people, and those with respiratory issues.
