Delhi air in January breached toxic gas limits with nitrogen dioxide and benzene spike

Delhi’s air quality in January was very poor and unsafe because harmful gases repeatedly went above safety limits. Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) stayed too high for over 25 days at many monitoring stations, and benzene, a gas linked to cancer, was above the World Health Organization’s safe level on 24 days of the month. At some locations, benzene even went beyond India’s annual safety limit. These pollution spikes mean many people in the city were breathing air that could harm their health and increase risks of lung and heart problems.
