Delhi records ‘cleanest’ December in last 9 years, AQI still in ‘poor’ category
Delhi logged its cleanest December since 2015, with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 294, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This relative improvement is attributed to strong winds in early December and record-breaking rainfall in the second half of the month, which helped disperse and wash away pollutants.
However, 294 still falls in the “poor” category — nearly three times worse than a “satisfactory” AQI — and reflects only a modest improvement. Moreover, Delhi still experienced six “severe” air-quality days during the month, when AQI readings exceeded 400, prompting restrictions on construction, vehicles and hybrid schooling.
Experts say while weather helped this December, real improvement will need long-term emission control and systemic pollution management — not just favourable winds or rains.
