Delhi unveils anti-air pollution plan for 2026; experts seek 'tangible targets'
Delhi has launched a new plan to tackle air pollution in 2026, but experts worry it might not work because it’s similar to previous plans that weren’t properly enforced.
The government says it will focus on main pollution sources like traffic, dust, construction, factories, and crop burning. Key actions include:
Stricter rules for polluting vehicles, including a “No PUC, No Fuel” rule and number-plate cameras.
Limiting entry of lorries that don’t meet clean fuel standards from November.
Expanding the bus fleet to nearly 14,000 by 2028, mostly electric.
Planting millions of trees and clearing old landfill sites by 2026–2027.
Using road sweepers, water sprinklers, and anti-smog guns to reduce dust.
However, experts say the plan mostly repeats old ideas. They want clear, measurable targets and a proper report on progress, not just announcements. They also stress that without strong, year-round action, the plan may fail again.
