Delhi’s air quality worsens for fifth day, October begins with highest pollution since 2020
Delhi’s air quality has worsened for a fifth straight day, recording an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 174.5 over the first four days of October—making it the capital’s most polluted start to the month since 2020. With the monsoon now withdrawn, weaker surface winds and a dry spell have trapped coarse dust particles (PM10) from roads and construction sites near the ground, causing 14 of the city's 43 monitoring stations to slide into the "poor" category. While authorities have already flagged 17 environmental violations regarding roadside waste and warned that crop burning and winter weather will drive pollution higher, a forecast of light rain later in the week could offer brief relief.
