Delhi’s Anand Vihar remains notorious hot spot of localised air pollution
Anand Vihar in east Delhi has been identified as a persistent “hot spot” of air pollution, with levels consistently far worse than much of the rest of the city. Even when most of Delhi enjoyed “moderate” to “poor” air after post-monsoon rains, Anand Vihar’s air quality index (AQI) reached as high as 423 — deep in the “severe” category. The area faces extreme pollution because of its mix of a large bus terminal, crowded railway and metro stations, heavy traffic on national highways, nearby industrial emissions, dust from construction and industrial sources across the state border. Experts say localised actions are urgently needed to fix traffic congestion, reduce dust and target emissions in Anand Vihar specifically, rather than relying solely on city-wide measures.
