How Delhi is planning to save its lungs from another smoggy winter
As winter approaches, Delhi is preparing for its usual smoggy season with a range of new measures. The city government plans technological interventions such as cloud-seeding to trigger artificial rain, mist sprayers on street poles and mandatory rooftop sprinklers on tall buildings, and the deployment of “anti-smog guns” to reduce dust and particulate matter.
On the regulatory front, stricter rules are set to be enforced: from 1 November, commercial vehicles that are not registered in Delhi and run on non-clean fuels will be barred from entering the city. There will also be audits of Pollution Under Control (PUC) centres every six months, and efforts to repair pothole-filled roads to reduce dust from traffic.
Despite these efforts, experts caution the plan still focuses too much on symptoms rather than sources. They say that unless emissions from vehicles, industry, waste-burning and solid-fuel stoves are dealt with at root, temporary fixes like sprinklers and guns won’t be enough.
