India: Diwali fireworks renew air pollution debate in Delhi

After Diwali in New Delhi, people set off large numbers of fireworks, which added to the city’s already heavy smog. This pushed air pollution to very unhealthy levels, with the air quality index (AQI) rising above 300 in many places. Parents, doctors and campaigners said the toxic air made breathing difficult, especially for children and older people. The city’s government and courts have tried to limit fireworks and enforce pollution rules, but politics and arguments between different authorities have made it difficult to reduce the problem. Experts say long-term planning and stronger action are needed to stop Delhi’s dangerous air pollution during festivals and every winter.
