Sharp rise in wheat stubble fires: April incidents jump nearly 2.6 times since last year

Farmers in Haryana are increasingly burning leftover wheat stalks (stubble) to quickly clear their fields for the next crop. This April, the number of fires spiked significantly, especially in the final week of the month. Districts like Jind and Rohtak have become "hotspots" for these fires.

Although these summer fires happen when the air is clearer than in winter, experts warn they still cause heavy pollution that can travel long distances to nearby cities. Officials are now trying to keep a closer eye on farms and are encouraging farmers to use machinery or other methods to get rid of waste instead of setting it on fire.
