Govt Decision To Not Limit Sulphur Emissions In Power Plants Last Year Could Kill 1.24 Lakh Indians Annually

The report criticises the Indian government’s 2025 decision to let around 80% of coal-fired power plants avoid installing pollution-control systems called FGDs (flue-gas desulphurisation units). Scientists say these systems can cut sulphur pollution by about 95%.

According to the study, sulphur pollution from power plants increases dangerous PM2.5 air pollution, which is linked to heart and lung diseases. States like Chhattisgarh and Odisha would benefit the most from cleaner air. Poorer and socially vulnerable groups, including OBC and SC/ST communities, are also expected to gain the most.

Experts quoted in the article say the cost of installing pollution controls is far lower than the healthcare and human costs caused by dirty air. They are urging the government to reverse its earlier decision and make all thermal power plants follow emission rules.
