Air pollution is the silent enemy of Indian monuments
Air pollution in India is not only harmful to health but is also slowly damaging historic monuments. Pollutants from vehicles, factories and power plants react with the stone surfaces of sites like the Red Fort, causing black crusts and corrosion. Similar effects were already seen at the Taj Mahal, where pollution has changed the colour of the marble. Experts say that weak implementation of pollution controls and rapid industrialisation are major problems. While conservation techniques can help protect buildings, stronger action to reduce pollution is needed to truly safeguard India’s heritage.
