Pollution crackdown tops Delhi agenda
The city's Air Quality Index (AQI) crossed the 400 mark, which is classified as 'severe', on that Saturday evening. In response, the Delhi government has threatened strict action against anyone violating the most stringent 'Stage-4' pollution control rules (known as GRAP). These rules include bans on construction and restrictions on vehicle entry.
Officials reported that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had already fined violators nearly ₹34 lakh (approximately £33,000) in the previous week and issued over 770 fines for construction violations. Weather conditions are expected to keep air quality in the 'severe' to 'very poor' range for the coming days.
