Capital’s pollution woes | Over 1,500 polluting units shut in NCR: CAQM

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has taken strong action against polluting industries in the National Capital Region (NCR) to combat air pollution.

  • Action Taken: The CAQM ordered the closure of all industries falling under the red and yellow categories that are carrying out polluting operations.

  • Scale of Impact: Following this order, over 1,500 polluting units have been shut down across the NCR: 360 in Delhi, 24 in Haryana, 637 in Uttar Pradesh (UP), and 536 in Rajasthan.

  • Court Context: The Supreme Court is hearing the matter and the Delhi government has been directed to file an affidavit on the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a set of emergency measures used to control pollution.

Essentially, the authorities are implementing strict closure orders for highly polluting factories as part of a long-term strategy to clean up the air in the Delhi and surrounding regions.
