CAQM sets new PM norms to cut industrial emissions
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has introduced a new, uniform limit for particulate matter (PM) emissions from various industries across Delhi-NCR, aiming to curb industrial pollution. While this targets pollution directly from factory chimneys, experts point out it overlooks "secondary aerosols," which are tiny particles formed when gases from industries, vehicles, and other sources react in the atmosphere. Analysis shows these secondary particles contribute around 27% of winter and 17% of summer PM2.5 pollution in Delhi-NCR, often more than direct industrial emissions. For example, in Gurgaon and Faridabad, one type of secondary pollutant alone can make up nearly a third of PM2.5. Experts argue that to truly clean the air, regulations must also limit the gases—like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides—that create this secondary pollution, not just the particles emitted directly. The CAQM has directed state governments to ensure industries comply with the new norms by the deadlines starting this August.
