Delhi summer pollution and why it is here to stay

Delhi's air pollution isn't just a winter problem anymore—it's now bad all year round. Last year, the city only had 79 days with "good" or "satisfactory" air quality, which is less than a quarter of the year.

The main culprits are pretty much the same as always: vehicles, industries, and power plants. In summer, the pollution just changes slightly. There's less of the tiny PM2.5 particles and more PM10 (slightly larger particles from dust) and ground-level ozone, which forms when sunlight hits traffic fumes. This summer is even worse because it's been very dry, so lots of dust is blowing in from other areas.

Even Mumbai, which usually gets away with it because it's by the sea, is now struggling with pollution because of poor planning and too many emissions. The simple message from experts is: "Weather does not create pollution, human activities do.
