Coal plants in India set to miss pollution goal as smog chokes Delhi

Many of India’s coal-fired power plants are likely to miss their year-end target to install pollution-control equipment that cuts sulphur-dioxide emissions, which help form smog. About three-quarters of the coal plants near big cities won’t meet the deadline, meaning harmful emissions will continue and add to the bad air quality affecting places like Delhi. Installing the equipment could reduce these pollutants by up to two-thirds, improving air quality and public health, but most plants have delayed action and only a small portion have put the systems in place so far.
