Diwali 2025: Is banning firecrackers enough? Experts weigh in
Experts have questioned whether banning firecrackers alone can solve Delhi–NCR’s worsening air pollution during Diwali. According to them, the problem is far more complex and cannot be tackled by focusing only on one source. While authorities continue to push for the use of “green” firecrackers and limited bursting hours, scientists and environmentalists believe these measures offer only temporary relief.
They point out that other major contributors — such as vehicle emissions, construction dust, industrial smoke and the annual crop stubble burning in neighbouring states — play a much bigger role in the city’s smog. Winter weather conditions, including low wind speed and temperature inversion, further trap pollutants close to the ground, worsening the air quality.
Experts suggest that instead of seasonal restrictions, Delhi needs long-term solutions such as stricter emission controls, improved waste management, and cleaner transport systems. Without addressing these root causes, they warn, the short-term bans or relaxations during Diwali will make little difference to the city’s choking skies.
