More Punjab villages turn to crop-waste recycling amid Delhi’s severe winter pollution
Some farmers in over 800 villages in Punjab are now recycling their crop stubble instead of burning it, to reduce the severe winter pollution in Delhi.
They use balers to collect the stubble, which is then sent to factories and turned into biogas, bio-fertiliser and cardboard.
Despite the shift, experts say there isn’t enough awareness or strong incentives yet for this to become widespread.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s AQI recently hovered around 400, putting it in the “severe” category and prompting tighter restrictions on construction and industry.
One farmer, Gurnaib Singh, has even opened a factory in Sangrur to make cardboard from the recycled stubble — helping both the environment and local employment.
