Farmers in Punjab recycle crop waste, aim to reduce worsening air pollution

Farmers in over 800 villages of Punjab are now collecting crop stubble using balers and sending it to factories instead of burning it, helping to reduce the severe air pollution in New Delhi.
The stubble is being converted into useful products like biogas, bio-fertiliser, and cardboard, with support from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
While this initiative has cut some burning, experts warn that awareness and incentives remain low compared to what’s needed for a larger impact.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality has been extremely poor — the AQI reached around 400, which is “severe,” prompting tighter restrictions on construction and industry.
