Several flights cancelled as ash from Ethiopian volcano eruption reaches India: 10 points

A vast plume of volcanic ash from the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia is drifting over north-west India, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, the Delhi region and Punjab. The ash cloud entered Indian airspace around 6.30 pm and is moving at high altitude (10–15 km), reducing visibility and disrupting flights. Several flights have already been cancelled or rerouted, as the DGCA has issued alerts and asked airlines to follow volcanic‐ash safety procedures. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the ash plume is unlikely to significantly affect ground-level air quality given its altitude, though hazy skies and a slight rise in minimum temperatures are possible. However, experts warn the event could exacerbate already very poor air quality in Delhi‐NCR if the ash descends further.
