Ash cloud from Africa volcano reaches India

A windborne cloud of ash from the eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia (the first in nearly 12,000 years) reached India on Monday night, traversing swathes of the northwest, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi-NCR, and Punjab. The ash was detected by the IMD at an altitude of above 10 km. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued an advisory to airlines, and carriers like Akasa Air and IndiGo reported several flight cancellations and diversions due to the plume, which hampers visibility and aviation traffic. The impact on ground-level air quality is expected to be minimal as the cloud is high up, but experts are monitoring the risk.
