High nitrogen dioxide levels choked Delhi’s January air at many stations: Study

In January 2026, the air in Delhi was heavily polluted not just by smog and dust but also by high levels of nitrogen dioxide and other harmful gases. An independent research group analysed official air quality data and found that nitrogen dioxide exceeded safe limits on more than 25 days at most monitoring stations in the city. Another dangerous pollutant, benzene, which can cause cancer, also went above the World Health Organization’s guideline on many days. Some areas recorded much higher nitrogen dioxide than last January, showing that toxic gases remain a serious concern for people’s health in Delhi.
