Can A Transition To Electric Vehicles Solve Delhi's Air Pollution?
Nearly 30 years after Delhi forced its public transport to switch to CNG, the city is launching a new "landmark initiative"—the Delhi EV Policy 2026. Starting January 2027, all newly registered auto-rickshaws and light delivery vehicles must be electric, followed by a total mandate on new electric motorbikes and scooters from April 2028.
The Key Dilemma: While Chief Minister Rekha Gupta aims to curb the city’s notorious smog, experts wonder if forcing everyone onto electric vehicles (EVs) will actually solve the broader crisis.
The Pollution Reality: Data shows that transport accounts for only 19% to 23% of Delhi's air pollution. The rest comes from industrial smoke, biomass burning, and seasonal dust storms, which EVs cannot fix.
The Scale of the Move: Two-wheelers make up the vast majority of Delhi’s 16 million registered vehicles, meaning this blanket ban on petrol and diesel models will hit everyday commuters and delivery workers the hardest.
