Delhi to get 14 more air quality monitoring stations, exceed 25 sq km coverage target

Delhi is significantly expanding its air quality monitoring network by adding 14 new stations in the upcoming financial year, following the recent inauguration of six others. This initiative aims to create a systematic 5km-by-5km grid, achieving a target of one monitoring station for every 25 square kilometers of the city—exceeding the previous coverage. Once complete, the total number of stations in Delhi will reach 60, giving it the densest such network in the country and helping eliminate geographical gaps in pollution tracking, especially in peripheral areas. Experts have welcomed the move for enabling better micro-level decisions and health-exposure studies, while also cautioning that stations should be placed in representative locations and that consistent, high-quality data collection is crucial for the network's effectiveness.
