Grey haze engulfs Delhi as farm fires, crackers raise AQI 100 pts

Air pollution levels in Delhi surged by more than 100 points on the Air Quality Index (AQI) on Thursday as smoke from farm fires in Punjab and firecrackers burst overnight combined with local emissions, calm winds, and falling temperatures to blanket the city in thick haze. The AQI reached 311, placing it in the “very poor” category. Stubble burning in neighbouring states contributed nearly 9.5% to Delhi’s PM2.5 pollution, the highest so far this winter, with forecasts warning that the share could rise further as northwesterly winds continue transporting smoke into the Capital.
