As Delhi gears for new EV policy, transition still unsteady in Gurgaon
While Delhi is charging ahead with its strict new EV goals, right next door in Gurgaon, things are moving at a snail’s pace.
Here is what’s going on:
People aren't buying them: Despite Delhi aiming for 100% electric bikes by 2028, Gurgaon is going backwards. Out of roughly 100,000 motorbikes and scooters registered there in the last financial year, a tiny 2.2% were electric. That’s actually a drop from the year before.
The incentives aren't working: Haryana launched its own EV policy back in 2022, offering plenty of cash discounts and tax breaks, but locals simply aren't biting as much as people in the capital.
A massive push for chargers: To fix the major issue of drivers running out of juice, the local government has changed the building rules. Now, all new blocks of flats and offices must install charging points—commercial spots have to provide one charger for every three parking spaces, and residential buildings need one for every five spaces.
