Nearly 4 in 10 Delhi EVs are two-wheelers, data shows; experts back EV adoption

The data shows that electric motorbikes and scooters are doing the heavy lifting for Delhi's green transition. Here is the breakdown:

  • Two-wheelers are leading the charge: Out of 430,000 registered electric vehicles in Delhi, nearly 170,000 of them are electric two-wheelers. That means roughly 40% (nearly 4 in 10) of all EVs in the city are motorbikes and scooters.

  • The logic behind the upcoming ban: Because two-wheelers make up such a massive portion of the city's transport emissions, experts say the government's plan to completely ban new petrol and CNG two-wheeler registrations from April 2028 is a crucial move to fight air pollution.

  • A bigger problem to solve: Experts note that while Delhi’s transition is going well, the policy needs to be matched by neighbouring regions. Because pollution travels across state borders, Delhi won't get the full clean-air benefits unless surrounding areas start adopting similar strict goals.
