Severe Pollution Returns as Delhi’s AQI Touches 440 in January

Delhi’s air quality became very bad in January, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) rising to about 440, placing it in the ‘severe’ pollution category — one of the worst levels seen in recent years. Thick smog covered the city, and low wind and weather conditions made it hard for the polluted air to clear. Authorities re-imposed strict pollution controls under the Graded Response Action Plan to try to reduce harmful emissions, but the toxic air posed serious health risks for residents.
