Despite experiencing a rare "good" air quality day early in the month following heavy rain, July 2026 became Delhi's most polluted July in six years, finishing with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 119. Environmental experts attribute the elevated pollution levels to a prolonged dry spell between July 11 and July 19, which caused fewer rainy days to wash away pollutants and led to the re-suspension of dry dust. Additionally, the city's air quality was temporarily worsened by dust blowing in from Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, alongside ongoing emissions from neighboring power plants and industrial units that offset recent vehicular emission gains.
